Love in JavaThe city populations are lost in the ambiguous meaning of this four letter word. With a divorce rate of 33% in Hong Kong, the almost-negligible percentage of 0.25% in this Javanese community in Jagalan makes us wonder whether it is a miracle for them or it is just the way that we are supposed to live. We have gone into the village to look for a genuine love story between an old couple for this Valentine’s Day collection. They say, may love be omah-omah.
Jagalan Silver craftsmanshipJagalan Silver craftsmanship, Jagalan Silver, is a silversmith community in Kotagede, the capital city of the Mataram Kingdom. Since the 10th century, Kotagede has been famed as the “Silver city” where most of the families have a silversmith who serves for the royal. Each handmade-jewelry is the showcase of the craftsmanship inherited from the Jagalan ancestors.
By the Community, For the CommunityThe biggest wish of the old silversmith is to pass on their traditional skills. Their income has been declining and it’s so little now the younger generations could not see any prospects from the career as a profession.
The vision of the community is to form a silversmith cooperative to complement the traditional craftsmanship with contemporary marketing. This project, which is facilitated by Arkom and Asia Sense Tour, kick started the collaboration between the local youths and silversmiths in Jagalan. The profits generated will not only bring rises in their income but part of the profits will be allocated to set up a Community Development Fund in Jagalan.
